The German expatriate Maximilian D. Berlitz founded the "Berlitz School of Languages" in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1878.

1881- Berlitz expands
Between 1881 und 1914, the company experienced huge expansion. More than 200 Berlitz language schools were founded worldwide. The first language school in Europe opened at Leipziger Strasse 123, Berlin, in 1888.

Berlitz constantly attracts attention with its advertising campaigns encouraging adults and children to join its language courses. This poster from France dates back to around 1900 and is still used in retro campaigns today.
